Biofeedback

Biofeedback is used to treat many types of conditions including chronic pain, migraine headache, spinal cord injury, and movement disorders. It involves relaxation training and behavior modification. Biofeedback works to control physiological reactions and requires the individual’s concentrated participation to learn how to control these functions. Biofeedback does not work for all individuals.

In a biofeedback session, a trained therapist applies electrodes and other sensors to the body. The electrodes are attached to devices that monitor and provide feedback on such items as muscle tension, brain wave activity, respiration, heart rate, blood pressure and temperature. Once the electrodes are in place, the therapist uses relaxation techniques to calm the individual, reduce muscle tension and slow heart rate and breathing. The goal is to help individuals learn how to produce these changes themselves and enter a relaxed state in which they can better cope with their pain.
